Ballet is and should be accessible to everyone. It can benefit everyone. However, there are barriers and attitudes that exist which prevent people from trying any ballet-inspired exercise. They derive from stereotypes – ballet is for girls, is pink, fluffy and twirly – and a refusal to look past the exterior of ballet and break down those barriers.

Ballet makes you strong, not girly. Ballet makes you toned, not skinny. Ballet makes you confident, improves your posture and makes you smile. And ballet is NOT always pink. There are no tights and legwarmers. No tutus and tiaras. Just hard work, sweat and a new found connection to your body.

“But I can’t dance”, I hear you say. “I am not graceful, or at all co-ordinated”. You don’t need to be! There is no dancing involved. Don’t let your preconceptions about ballet stop you from joining the Breaking Ballet workouts. Come to the virtual dance studio and reap the benefits alongside your fellow ballet bodies and I will guide you through your ballet journey.


Can anyone join this programme?
Yes. Whether you are a busy mother racing around ticking off the next task on your never-ending to do list, a commuter chained to a desk for 12 hours a day hunched over devices, or someone who is just looking for an alternative exercise regime to the gym, or to learn a new skill.

Whoever you are and wherever you live, Breaking Ballet is here for you. I will guide you in the right direction to ensure you are armed with some knowledge before your ballet workout journey begins and then support and encourage you throughout your workout programme.


What are the key benefits?
The Breaking Ballet workouts will help you towards achieving the posture of a dancer. You will gain long, lean muscles (no bulk), toned arms and a toned trim tummy. Your bottom (and spirits) will lift and your thighs will get trimmer. The tension in the body will be released and your mobility will improve. Most importantly, you will reconnect with your body and carry with you a renewed sense of self and confidence, without pounding your body into the ground.


Who is Sarah?
I am a trained dancer and qualified dance teacher but that’s not where my ballet story began. I started dancing when I was two but became a lawyer in London for ten years before having my young family. Throughout the “legal” years I struggled to find a workout I enjoyed and that would fit in with my hectic lifestyle. I tried everything but nothing inspired me and I didn’t stick at anything for very long. I became frustrated. I began to realise I hadn’t previously danced to get in shape. I had danced because I loved it and it happened to keep me in shape. So why not do that now?

After rekindling my love affair with ballet, I qualified as a ballet teacher and I now help other people to reap the ballet benefits. I’m on a mission to break down ballet’s barriers so that everyone can enjoy a ballet-inspired workout, no matter who they are, how old they are, what they’re wearing, what they look like, or how bendy they are. There is no dancing in the Breaking Ballet programme, just ballet-inspired exercises to make you strong, lean and confident.

My fitness philosophy
In order to stay healthy and happy, I know how important it is to find an exercise regime that works for you and has longevity. Something that you enjoy, that can become part of your daily routine, that challenges you and uplifts you. A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body.

Ballet is an art form that anyone can learn. It is not just for those svelte long-limbed creatures whose vocation is to dance professionally. When you join the Breaking Ballet virtual dance studio, not only are you reaping all the benefits physically, but you learn which muscle group or groups to engage to perform a particular movement correctly and you will learn a new language (its all in French!). Most importantly you learn correct posture, which can be applied during your daily routines and help to prevent and alleviate any aches and pains you may have. Ballet provides a huge sense of achievement at learning a new skill. It is this sense of achievement that will keep you going.

My goal has always been to break down preconceptions of traditional ballet and offer something that is accessible to lay people/non-dancers but retains the essence, beauty and integrity of ballet as a form of movement/exercise and as an art form. Something that helps achieve the toned, powerful body type that ballet dancers are so well known for, whilst simultaneously striving towards fostering a love for ballet movement and the way it makes you feel inside.
